Kongsvold mountain Hut
As early as the 12th century, "sælehus", the "self–service cabins" of the period, were set up at mountain passes to make the journey over the mountains safer for wayfarers. Later on the mountain inns appeared. Kongsvold Mountain Hut has had official status since 1670 and is the last of the mountain inns on the Dovrefjell. During the great Nordic war in 1718 Kongsvold and the other Dovre mountain inns were burnt down. In 1720 they were rebuilt and the oldest buildings here are reckoned to date from that time. EP0703

Vårstigen
The old King's Way goes up here. The road is mentioned as early as 1182 and is called the Pilgrims` Way after all who went on pilgrimage to St Olav`s shrine in Nidaros. In the year 1700 it was made possible to drive on it but it was regarded as very dangerous. King Frederick IV needed a 2–wheeled carriage in 1704, and King Kristian VI a four wheeled coach in 1733.
