Map 36. Solsjøen - Mellingsetra - Skaun

Marshland towards Mellingsetra
After Solsjøbygda comes a 5 km walk through rather swampy ground. The landscape has no special features and in cloudy weather it is essential to follow the way marking. EP0705

Resting stone
This "resting stone" was used by Princess Märtha and her husband Ari Behn on their pilgrimage from Orkdal to Nidaros in 2002. They carved their initials here, but these have now been removed by unknown people.  They described their experiences in the book "From heart to heart". EP0705

Resting stone before Skaun
There are several "resting stones" along the way, this one is 2,5 km before reaching Skaun Church. It is sensible to use them as places to sit and to unload⁄adjust baggage. EP0705

Skaun Church
According to the masons' marks similar to those found on the Octagon at Nidaros Cathedral, Skaun church can be dated to around 1180 A.D. The style is gothic with Norman influence. EP0705

The sanctuary arch in Skaun Church
The sanctuary arch in the medieval church at Skaun is pointed, like the exterior doorways and is one of the few not to have been extended later. The decoration found under later layers of whitewash, probably shows the Last Judgement. EP0705

The glory of the church - its altar frontal
The greatest treaure of Skaun Church. It is in early gothic style, from the pre–reformation period. It portrays scenes from the childhood of Jesus grouped round the image of Mary with the Infant Jesus, enthroned as Queen of Heaven. This is one of the two Madonna altar frontals still existing in Norway. And it is only one of the remaining 31 frontals still used in the church it was made for. EP0705
